5 Tips for Running Your HVAC Efficiently in the Fall

After the heat of summer, everyone is ready for cooler temperatures in the fall. The weather outside might be more comfortable, but keeping your inside thermostat set for the roller coaster of temperatures throughout the day can be tough. Here are our tips for managing efficiency during the autumn season. Don’t underestimate the value of regular maintenance for HVAC efficiency.

Turn Your HVAC System Off

There’s an internet joke about keeping your heat off as long as possible when the cooler temperatures hit, but there’s something to say about leaving your HVAC system off when it’s not so hot outside. You may want to use a jacket on cooler days or add a blanket to your bed at night. If it gets a little warmer during the day, use a fan to circulate the air during the hottest part of the day. Save money on your heating and cooling by not using your HVAC system.

Reduce Your Normal Settings

Another way to reduce your utility bills is to set your AC up a few degrees or set your heater lower than you normally do. Adjust your setting by just two degrees at a time and use it for a few days before you adjust it back. Chances are you won’t even notice after a bit of time. You may also be able to keep your heat lower at night than you might think. Adjust your thermostat a few degrees at a time to see what you can live with.

Install a Dehumidifier

Humidity often makes me feel warmer than we actually are. Your HVAC system takes out the humidity of your home’s air. When you don’t run it, it might feel warmer because of the moisture in the air, not because it’s actually hot. If you live near the ocean or another body of water, a dehumidifier can reduce the moisture in the air, saving your HVAC system for when the days are really uncomfortable.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

Instead of adjusting your thermostat manually, use a smart thermostat to streamline energy and keep your home comfortable, whether you’re home or not. You can set it and let it do the hard work of managing your fuel use based on the temperature of your home.
